I recently used a product called "leather honey" on some older leather to soften it. Worked great. Not sure that the product would provide protection although from what would you need protection?
mink oil works great to repel water, and it softens leather.
Saddle Soap
Did you try saddle soap? It works on leather products like saddles and boots, so it should work on your purse. Try it on an inconspicuous spot first to see if it changes the color.
thankyou
Yes, Leather Honey will absorb into leather and protect it from rain. Used it on my father's motorcycle jacket from the 1940s. Made the leather much more supple and rain will run right off.
Neets Foot Oil works great...cleans and conditions at the same time.
