You may be able to pull the Formica off of the wood it is glued to. (Which is the base) Then attach a thin piece of decorative wood on top. Then stain the wood.
flip the table over and unscrew the top but save for a pattern. Use 1 sheet of 3/4 inch 4x8 birch plywood (cabinet grade) and place old table top on it; draw a line around top and remove top. Cut out new top outside drawn line. Stain new top and apply polyurethane; 3-4 coats should do it. Attach new top to table base and attach moulding all around to cover edges. New top!
