it is probably shaker cedar siding. Remove it and get regular new siding. There is nothing you can do with that except live with it. It is brownish, right? That is cedar and the resins in cedar will come right through paint.
Are you sure the siding is wood... or is it sort of "composite" looking? Siding from the 1950's could contain asbestos and I don't think it can be just painted. Figure out exactly what your siding IS made of and then check on regulations for painting or covering it.
