Southern Traditions: Why Did My Grandmas Sweep Their Yards?
My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
Work in sections. If you have kids, get them to help. Think of it as part of your exercise routine and you will be done in no time!
Less time than what?
use a blower and just blow them into a pile then put in bags or whatever way you usually dispose of them- we blow ours onto a big tarp and drag the tarp to an area where we dump them in our yard
A leaf blower is a great idea. Blow them into a pile and they are so easy to pick up.
Hello Sandra! Everything goes faster and seems easier with music! If you have an iPhone, MP3 player or iPod and ear buds, use while raking. You could also use a leaf blower and blow them all into one or more piles. Since it is the end of our gardening season, my husband blows our leaves into our garden where it composts for next season.
Get a blower at hardware store and blow onto a tarp. If you have to bag, use a pair of hand leaf grabbers, and set your bag in any holder that will keep it open. OR hire someone to do it for you.
Don't rake them, mow them. It's great for your lawn. Natural fertilizer.
If you really want to rake them up, hire a neighborhood kid. Good Luck.
My husband removes the blade from the mower and just blows the leaves in one direction so he can tarp and remove the bulk of the leaves after the first huge leaf fall. After that, at the very end of fall, with the blade back on, he mows the leaves with the grass for one last lawn clean-up. BTW...even though burning leaves mean "fall" in some areas, please don't burn the leaves! Use the leaves for compost, mulch, etc.
