I have never had a professional duct cleaner myself. You can keep things clean by using mops, brushes, vacuum hose or most anything you can get down the ducts. Yes you can use any kind of wipe you want. I also lay a packet of sachet in a couple of the ducts after cleaning, Kirkland's has some that smell Heavenly! Go start cleaning!!
Duct cleaning is a rip off. Contractors use duct cleaning to get them in the door to "find" other "problems". It's gravy in their pocket. As long as you replace the furnace filter once a month your good. I use pleated filters. If you do any dirty remodel close off the vents or cover them so nothing gets into the ducts.
William has a very good point about replacing your furnace filters regularily and after every remodelling job. Simple and effective maintenance.
Also, check your vacuum cleaner filters on a monthly basis. Remove, wash, or replace as necessary. Don't be ripped off paying for central vacuum system cleaning.
A few homeowners in our condo complex just got new heat/air conditioning unit. When we inquired about getting the ducts cleaned we were told BAD idea. More often than not the cleaning equipment can put tears in the ducts. Then you are in for a very pricy fix.
If you use wipes and don't dry the area that you made wet, everything will stick in that area. Professional duct cleaning will save you money in the long run, especially if you have a dog. The air is cleaner, and you don't have to worry about vaccum cleaning. If you vaccum, you can only reach a small area which is a waste of time. The part that you don't clean will just fill up where you vaccumed.
