The escutcheon seems to be attached at the top and bottom. I don't want to damage the door as I intend to paint them
Wet the wallpaper and use a scrubbing cloth especially done!
It really depends on what kind of glue was used etc when first applied. Sometimes they are easy and sometimes not. What you are really trying to do is to deactivate the glue. There is a special scraping tool that makes lots of little cuts. This allows hot water, steam and / or fabric softner to get it and start working. You will need a scraping tool.
Start with a paint tray, and a paint roller with a long handle. Next, put warm water in the tray, roll the brush in the water, roll off excess, and roll the wall. Start at the bottom and work your way up the wall. Buy a wide putty knife, and scrape the paper off the wall, bottom up. Make sure to wet the paper enough for it to release the paper. Scrub the glue off the wall with a large sponge, in warm water.

Best Way to Remove Wallpaper
Fabric softener and hot tap water mixed together in a paint tray or spray bottle. Roll as previously stated from bottom to top leave about 5 to 10 minutes then using a scraper gently remove the wallpaper. As it has been on the walls for so long You may need to leave for the 10 minutes, the hotter the tap water the better it will enable the fabric softener to help lift the paper from the wall surface. I love Wallpaper and this is the very best method I have found w/o a steamer as this does work the best and is how professionals remove it.
I hope this is helpful and enables YOU to tackle this project with confidence.
