burlap would work or you could put like a fiber type board over the window that you covered with burlap and fabric glue
I think they would look much better if they were not patterned also. They seem to draw your eyes up to them and not the wonderful scenery outside the window. I would go with something that pretty well matches the wall color if you could find it.
I like the idea, but burlap gets dusty quickly. Maybe a different fabric?
Burlap will give your room a country accent. The cornices (top) could be lengthened, giving you a more finished look to your beautiful windows.
I had similar in my living room. Nine feet long. Only mine was in 70's colors. Mauve, rose, and pink. I took the valance down removed the fabric and purchased brown fabric that looked like burlap but was smoother. Added some 1/2" quilting padding, wrapped it with the new fabric, and rehung it. Gave the room a total different look.
Shrink your burlap in water and lay flat to dry. Iron. Make your toppers and before hanging spray with flat polyurethane. Don't use gloss. Sealing it makes it much easier to clean.
I would cut a length of Burlap that just fits inside the window, hang it with a tension rod, then put two or three more tension rods a few inches apart down from the first one and drape the burlap over it so it looks like a roman shade.
I would recommend a different fabric too since it will be hard to clean burlap. The valances you have now seem a bit small for the windows. If you wanted to put up drapes some day the valance should be long enough for the bulk of the drape to come off the window. Deep enough so that the drape is loose against the wall and not scrunched. I'd also want the new valance to come down over the top of the window frame it should cover the hardware of your blinds and any drapery rods. Personal choice for me would to make it wider, from below the top frame of the window to almost the ceiling. Since your home isn't fussy I'd even consider making a valance out of wood/or fiberboard and painting it white to match the trim. Too much? Take them down patch the wall and go without a valance at all. Your room would look fine without anything.
I think it would look better without them period.
I'm with Sharon....no valances period! Sheer curtains if you like, but no valances.
No topper. But if you make them I think a tad larger in width and length.
I am with Sharon also
You could use Velcro and placemats. There are so many different varieties of placemats that that you could even swap them out for different seasons. Below is a pic of my kitchen window. Have fun!
First of all the valances were hung incorrectly when installed. The top of the valances should've been even with the top of the woodwork/window frame. Not directly above.
I also endorse taking them down entirely and leaving the windows blank to speak for themselves. It appears there are standard mini blinds on the windows. A way to completely change the look of the windows and to add a better layer of insulation would be to replace the mini blinds with 2-inch wood or faux wood blinds in white to match the woodwork. The result is reminiscent of plantation shutters, which are quite expensive. The 2-inch blinds would also give an illusion of the long slender windows being wider.
I don't think what you have really adds anything to the décor. Nor do I think burlap would. Burlap is really a primitive style fabric, appropriate in that type of décor. You appear to a more modern décor. Natural color burlap would actually clash with the color of your walls.Plus you cannot launder burlap. Why not hang a regular topper ? Or a topper and sheer curtains? (leaving the blinds underneath for light control. I would pick a topper of a color to add accent - such as the color of your pillows.
What about a larger print( or plain if you prefer )but sew in two larger squares ,like pillows covers and lay them over the curtain rods so they resemble triangles ,two per window
