brush daily or at least twice a week not with anything else but the silicone glove (from pet shops on line surely obtainable in the USA or where ever you are). Has little stubs on the inside, works like an absolute dream with the static that collects all the hair on the glove, you will be astounded at how much hair comes off no matter how long you brush your cat. And whilst other things like a nit comb made my cat bite me, she loves the massage. useless on my long haired dog.
Brushing daily does help. I have 6 so mine are more like every other day. Here are some helpful links!

Get rid of the cat-plain and simple.
You'll need to brush the cat to reduce shedding.
Cats naturally shed their fur in the spring and summer, then they grow it for the winter to stay warm. Some cats shed more than others depending on their breed. To keep shedding down, brush you cat more often.
