Dont bother with tape. Waste of time. I do all edges, ceiling and side walls. Take your time doing this step thus avoiding the tape. Then using a 12 inch roller, roll on. Good quality angled brush, use the tip of the brush to get good lines on the ceiling and side walls. Simple and easy.
Ceiling, Walls, trim & doors, floor. That's the order.
I work from the top down and cut in arouncd ceilings and baseboards. I use a trowel to get sharp lines. See if these links help.

I do all the edging first, then paint. It’s important to paint wherever you edged on the same day. It just blends better that way.
Naimie’s trowel idea is a keeper!!!
There are edger's that you can hold up against the ceiling edge to help avoid getting paint on the ceiling with the brush, or use one of those flat pad type painting things that don't get paint on the ceiling. Sorry I don't know the names of those tools, as it has been years since I have used them! They really do help!
