Usually you use a cement backer board over the studs as well as a sealer over the cement board.

Insulate the walls and waterproof drywall. You don't need cement board since this is a surround and not tile. You need a solid backing or the surround would flex.

Are you installing a plastic surround above a tub? Here is one type that is a one piece unit. Note they are using green board to fill the areas instead of drywall, its for moist environments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TEVf4DubtI

I suggest you look on YouTube for the type of surround your installing and watch several videos.

If you are just using plastic panels, you need to add your backer board selecting one recommended for the surround you buy at the home store... at least green board... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n32y0fBj3Ck

Try something water resistant like Go Board. It's lightweight and easy to install.

You need to sheet the walls with water rock or a newer product called wonder board before the surround can be put in. (There has to be a solid, water/humid proof backer for the surround to attach to.)
