Do you want to start with container plantings,or in gardens ? What is your location
If I were beginning, I would grow an herb garden: thyme, oregano, rosemary, basil, etc. I don't know what zone you're in, but you can find out online, and plant, in addition, some annual flowers in the spring. Those are two small projects you could research and carry out successfully for your first growing season. These can be grown very successfully in containers. :)
Start with the basics - Your soil is the most important. Get it tested through your County Agricultural Extension Office. Call them, they will tell you what to do.
After you have figured out where you want your garden (in an area that has at least 6 hours of sun) and you know what is needed to amend your soil, You need to get rid of grass and weeds. If you don't take this step, you will get discouraged by all the weeds you have to pull later. Then and only then, should you get into what plants you want to grow. Reading about plants, then picking and choosing what grows best in your area is fun.
