Best way I know is to use what used to be known as a "Shell Pest Strip" (still available, just called something else now) and hang it in the plant. Wrap the plant in a CLEAR/White plastic bag or sheeting (black ones will block all the light and kill the plant) make sure that the plastic cover the pot too. Leave the plant in the wrap with the strip for at least 7 days. Make sure the plant is NOT in FULL SUN... or the plant will be cooked inside the plastic...in the shade is okay. You should be able to bring your plant inside with out passengers.

I spray the entire plant, pot and soil with plant safe insect killer. Then bring them in the next day. The only hitchhiker I had last year was a striped lizard which the cat quickly dispatched.
