They make products specifically to either paint over, lighten, or remove grout. If it is in good condition, I would use "grout aide" - a product that paints over grout easily in the form of a liquid pen.
There are grout markers. All colors. They re-color and seal at the same time. Buy a couple; don't leave with just one.
You can buy a grout pen that colors the grout just like a real pen would color a line. I wouldn't go too light right away--- pick a medium tone and live with that for a while and see if it is right. You can always go lighter. It is a tedious project but worth the time and effort. Changing the grout color is an immediately noticeable change.
