I like the kitty litter idea.
Try putting the books in a box with a layer of newspaper to protect them- then a layer of charcoal - cover an put in a dry place for a few wks. A retired librarian friend shared this with me. Hope it helps

Place in trashbags with charcoal. Leave in about a week. Should make them a bit better.
If you can put an open book in a container (maybe plastic underbed storeage) with a bowl of activated charcoal (aquarium type) time will take care of the musty smell.
I agree with using charcoal or even baking soda to get the smell out. Putting them in a bag and securing it would help.
