Maybe you should put down a semi-rough surface, which you can get from paint. They have many colors, styles and textures. Homedepot or Lowe's paint department can help you in this area.
Smooth concrete can be very slippery. You might want to reconsider keeping your front porch surface with a little grip to it, rather than filling the roughness in completely, just from a safety point.
We have 'stamped concrete' in a natural brown color. It's quite beautiful but it's not free. We have a large area of concrete/driveway and tree roots(PALM Trees) destroyed/cracked our concrete, this option adds value to property. Everybody looks at it.
