Start with a container that's made for compost, it has a handle that you turn to mix everything, over and over again. Next, try Homedepot or Lowe's, in the garden section or nursery to purchase the barrel. The employee in that department should be able to help you. I would either buy or go to your public library for a book on how best this is done. Good Luck!
i have two different compost piles, one for kitchen waste and easily composted garden waste (mulched leaves, grass, vegetable plants) another for weeds, brush, twigs etc. For the kitchen waste I have a bin in which the waste gets placed along with a layer of dirt (enough to cover the waste in a thin layer). as the earth comes out of my garden, there are some worms that I leave in intentionally. Over time, this rots down to make a rich soil. one can purchase a composting compound to speed up the process, but to me that is counter intuitive to the idea of composting, so I never do...but my containers are large enough that I can wait the extra time for the compost.
