We did our bathroom in something similar to shiplap, but cheaper, and I love it! So I think beadboard would be my choice. You can always paint over it at some point, and it should be able to just go right over what you have, minus the area you have to repair. We are just planning to go over every room in our house eventually (covering up popcorn ceilings).
If you want a different look, put up the bead board. I think that would look great, depending on your budget.
iv got bead board in the breeze way, quilting and crafts, and the garage. It’s been waxed so often over the years tape won’t stick to it. I’d like a nice sheet rock paintable with insulation in the walls.
I have never seen a bead board ceiling so I looked on Pinterest and I think it is lovely. Put on the wall in our laundry room and I love it there. Here are some that I read and thought might be helpful:

I think bead board would look unique. I don't know why the ones in Dfm's house were waxed. Bead board can be painted just like sheet rock.
Linda, yes, it's not the 'easy' part, it's the 'messy' part I want to avoid, lol!!
