You do not need shelf space or a mantle. Just use the tables you already have. Flip through magazines and look on Pinterest to get ideas how to arrange things attractively. Get a decorator savvy friend to help. Or hire a local decorator for an afternoon.
Put smaller tables under the big ones and wrap the smaller ones with plastic tablecloths that are Christmas colors. use lites around each window either get a pencil tree or make a thin tree out of styrofoam or a board and nails & a garland then string lites and decos on it. place it just above the tables and place presents on table.
Maybe you could use some of the space on the tables: use part of each table or designate a whole table for the decorations. Also, table runners, chair backs, and garland on the cabinets or walls could also be used with mini lights. Decorate your front door inside and out and the other inside doors in the house. We hang wreaths or decorations on all the bedroom, bathroom, and pantry doors. If you have an over head area above a door between the front room and dining or kitchen you could place decorative branches or wreaths between the top of the door and the ceiling. Don't for get windows! Hang wreaths or lights or both! We have very small space, but it all gets some decoration!
You can hang some festive hangings from the ceiling! Mistletoe, paper snowflakes etc.
I have a very open living room and little space to decorate. I remove all I can off of my tables and store it away and put up my Christmas decor. We also use those command strips by 3M to hang our stockings cuz we don't have a fireplace either. You could hang anything you wanted with those and they won't leave marks at all. I also have 4 large windows with blinds, so I just hang stuff from the top of the window with a thumb tack like small wreaths, outdoor flags with Christmas theme on them, etc. The ceiling fan is also a great place to hang from unless you use it, we don't use ours in the winter so we hang from it! Good luck!
