No....I NEVER cover mine.
It may depend on where you live. Here in Central Texas we leave them uncovered and they bloom beautifully until it gets really warm in the spring. Also, dianthus do well in our winters, which are nothing compared to more northern areas, but we do often have freezes down to the mid-teens. (I hear the laughter from Canadian and really northern Hometalkers!)
