Insulation board covered with your favorite fabric, wallpaper, or Contact paper. It's easy to carve into traditional headboard shapes. You can also glue brass tacks into it for a tufted look.

Go to a thrift store - lots of headboards (and complete beds), really cheap. Most of the time a lot less expensive than some of the home projects suggested here. Just wash it down well. Spray any crevices with insecticide - let it sit a few days, then wash it down again.
This is about as easy and inexpensive as anything.
Agree with Lisa S. Check out your second hand stores. Even if they're a little beat up, you can always cover them with fabric (or a sheet) over batting OR a large framed picture hung over the bed works.
buy a piece of plywood , drill holes ( small ones ) in it, then cover it with batting, then material. put buttons onto the board with fishing line, and tack it down with staples on the back side. walah ! done and it is beautiful ! We did one like this and it turned out fantastic.
this is pretty much what Kcama suggested, but I found all materials at our town swap shop, fabric, board etc. Also every time I go there, there is at least one bed frame. . . all for free. But other suggestions are right, not only second hand but shops like Goodwill, where eons ago I bought my brass bed for $9.
I made this headb from 1/2 OSB with vinyl from JoAnns and 2 eggcrate mattress covers placed face to face then glued to the board. On the back I marked the pattern and drilled holes to pull the strings with the buttons through then secured the string with heavy staples. Hang directly on the wall. There are some great tutorials on YouTube to show you how. The customer paid $250 for this headboard. That is a $180 profit!
you can cut out thick foam board to the shape you want then cover with cloth!!! You can add buttons to give the dimple look or gather it or twist it and Staple or glue in the back. Have fun!
