Do you have wall space? And what type of look do you prefer? I have a really old house, and like old houses, it has little actual storage. I have used metal plumbing pipes and wooden boards to create storage in several rooms. I love the mix of industrial and rustic, and its easy to stack books, and hide craft items in baskets.
You could use wooden pallets, which are free in some places, to make shelving in your closet to save space. Also to make a bookshelf. Or you could use old milk crates and cover them decoratively with contact paper to use as bookshelves.

I added a 6 inch shelf one foot down from the ceiling all way around the room. It holds books, small stuffed animals my kids used to play with an other treasures. I also did this in my dining room where I store vases and collector plates. This gives the rooms a feeling of warmth and adds character.
If you have a small room, think UP for storage. You've gotten a few good ideas, but look around your room for more UP ideas. Of course, another way is to look down. ;) What can you put under your bed? Can you raise the bed to create more room. What about under dressers? Do the dressers have legs? Can you create a slide out box that would fit under there? Just thinking - Good luck with your project!
Are you looking into turning a small bedroom into a combination library and craft storage?
Get a floor to ceiling bookcase for the books. You can get plastic storage containers that are on rollers. They fit under your bed.
Thank you all for your idea's.I will try these out and keep you posted.
