Flux is how plumbers do it. It is made to assist in the suction or wicking of the solder in to the joint for a stronger, leak proof joint.
The coupling goes over the pipe. Flux on the pipe and inside the coupling allows the coupling to slip over the pipe and draws the solder when soldering. Make sure that the pipe is still round after cutting. A little too much pressure/force when cutting can cause it ti oval. Then it won't fit the coupling. Don't use any lubricant or the pipe and coupling/fitting won't solder together.
