Buy a book on the subject or find a course. Perfect one thing at a time on a small object, before risking all ............
A good paint job generally starts with a good prep. Your paint will need to have a good surface to stick to. A light sanding usually provides that. Also remember that two light coats are better then one heavy or thick coat. Make it habit of checking your work out after you are done looking for runs that you can smooth out before the paint dries.

Best of luck and have fun learning. Be sure to take pics as you do your first piece and post them here so we can enjoy your progress. :)
I think the hardest thing is prepare the piece to be painted.....cleaning, sanding, removing paint, feeling holes, taping, etc....DH likes to use small rollers but I prefer a nice, preferably new brush...then to be patient....sand, clean, go over second (third time??)...I don't like to use clear varnish, I rather use wax....
When I started, I started small to get used to different techniques. I painted smaller items. Or I would paint something, that it didn't really matter if I messed it up. If you search in the bar at the top of the Hometalk page next to the blue home icon, you can search painted furniture or search on pinterest for different techniques or types of paints to use. Just pick one that looks fun and try it out. It takes time to try them all out and learn them all, just tackle one at a time. I even practiced on picture frames!
