You can't always tell, eventhough many sites say you can. It is worth checking with your municipality to see if they have your house plans on file. If they don't, it is worth hiring a structural engineer. A friend was told by an inspector, that his wasn't load bearing. when they opened the wall they saw some illegal supports. When the SE came out, he explained that they not only needed a beam but extra support in the basement. It isn't always as easy as putting in a header.
