We always use a variation of the burning method (see above). Heat up the grill to very hot get a damp rag and use your grill brush to wipe rag over grates. Between the heat and the steam, it comes out clean. Be careful, the rag gets hot. Also use one that's old as it wI'll not come out clean after washing. We have a couple that we use over and over. We use thinner ol kitchen wash clothes.
We clean ours with oven cleaner. Put in garbage bag, spray and let sit till cleaner show progress. Brush down then place either in the dishwasher or wash in sink with detergent.
Never waste time on scrubbing!!!! Not to mention every time you wash the grates you're scrubbing off the "seasoning" of the grate. When you are planning on grilling, turn on the grill to the highest temp with dirty grates right where they belong, close lid, and leave alone for at least 20 minutes, open grill scrub with a wire grill brush. (grill should still be on) Re-set flame to where you need it for cooking and grill away! When food is done, leave grill on, close lid, and let set for about 10 minutes, scrub and you're ready for the next round of grilling!!!!!
Get a pumice stone grill cleaner. Ditch all wire brushes. They will leave wire bristles behind for future ingestion
