Clear furniture out of room. Close air ducts and tape paper over. Put drop cloth on floor. Wear a filter mask. Keep scraper flat so you do not make gouges.

If you spray it with warm water (I use a spray bottle I picked up at Home Depot) and use a plastic putty knife (wide blade) the texture comes right off without damaging the ceiling. As others have said, put down a plastic tarp to protect the floors and be sure to wear eye protectio.
I hope your ceiling hasn't been painted!! I don't have the popcorn, but some kind of flower stamped design and some previous person did a terrible job of replacing the exhaust and the so called touch up is even lousier!!!! Then they painted the ceiling with glossy paint. It's horrible! Didn't notice it when looking to buy the house. lol
