Popcorn ceiling removal

I'm about to "attempt" removing a popcorn ceiling. Will I be looking at sanding/spackling afterwards? I sure hope not! Any tips to avoid that? I'm hoping the removal process will be enough, along with priming/painting. Thanks!

Hello! Here is a guide on how to remove popcorn ceiling. Click on the link below to access it. One word if caution: If the home was built prior to 1979, have it tested for asbestos prior to removal.

Clear furniture out of room. Close air ducts and tape paper over. Put drop cloth on floor. Wear a filter mask. Keep scraper flat so you do not make gouges.

It all depends upon how well you clean the ceiling while removing the popcorn.

If you spray it with warm water (I use a spray bottle I picked up at Home Depot) and use a plastic putty knife (wide blade) the texture comes right off without damaging the ceiling. As others have said, put down a plastic tarp to protect the floors and be sure to wear eye protectio.

I hope your ceiling hasn't been painted!! I don't have the popcorn, but some kind of flower stamped design and some previous person did a terrible job of replacing the exhaust and the so called touch up is even lousier!!!! Then they painted the ceiling with glossy paint. It's horrible! Didn't notice it when looking to buy the house. lol
