Hello. Ceiling paint is a flat thicker paint. It is better for ceilings since it covers better and is thicker. You could use a flat white latex paint but will have more drips and splatters.

I like the ceiling paint that goes on blue and dries white. It's easy to see where you've been if you're painting over an already white ceiling.
I don't like using ceiling paint because it's flat paint and I think it's very chalky. I use egg shell paint because you can dust webs and such down very easily. It doesn't have a shine but is similar to using semi gloss paint. I use it on my walls too because it's a washable paint with out that awful shine. Just ask for the egg shell finish at your hardware store.
You just want to make sure whatever paint you use on the ceiling is flat, not glossy. You can paint your ceiling the same color as your wall.
