outside of re-painting them you can cover them with removable contact paper
they can be primed and painted- i have a metal storage piece with several paint layers on it.

I would remove them and take them outside. Lay out on saw horses. Sand them with the proper grit sand paper for metal, clean well and then spray paint. Use light coats of spray and be sure to do two coats. If you do not want to sand there is a paint deglosser which will remove the sheen and give you a better job.
