We used a primer called "KILZ". It covered stains and other marks . Worked well. We painted 4 rooms and a hallway. Looked nice.
Hi Jeanie. I used a wood filler that you can paint to fill in the holes on paneling.
Mary: I love Kilz too, But I think they might have meant what to fill in the grooves with.

I use no shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth it out. Use a good stain blocking primer like Kilz or BIN.
Be sure to use repaintable calk
It depends on if you want a flat wall or if you don't mind the plank affect on the wall.
