if you do not smoke ...what have you purchased lately
Are you close to a tobacco field? Work with smokers?
What type of building do you live in? some apartments and condo's share ventilation pipes that people rage against their smoker neighbors. You can have an HVAC guy put in a air cleaner between units. or you can simply block off the ventilation pipes the odor is coming from and just pop off your deck door or window for some air.
You can leave cups of apple cider vinegar around the house to neutralize the smell
No, I don’t live near tobacco, and this is a single-family house. It has a crawl space with black plastic that covers the ground underneath. I have not bought anything new lately. What type professional shd I consult? House built in 2010, but I didn’t smell it at first.
Have you recently mulched around the outside of your house. That could be the culprit. I often thought that new mulch had that odor.
I’ve been in people’s houses that make my clothes smell this way. I’ve also been in peoples houses they have such a bad pet odor that my pants from where I sat never smell the same! Recently I discovered that I could put a few spoonfuls of baking powder, not baking soda or baking powder into my laundry load. I then I take a small spoonful of dish soap and mix it in with the baking powder. There’s not enough dish soap inside of the washing machine to ruin it or to lather but just enough that it seems to attach itself to the baking powder and leave a light scent on dirty areas of clothing. I’ve also done this on my husbands fire fighting uniforms in the armpits and collars. It works just fine and any dish soap will work but I use an organic kind. I use seventh generation with a tang of citrus or lemon.
The fresh tobacco odor may be coming from the carpets or fabrics around the house...a chemical smell that mimics fresh tobacco. I would start with taking down drapes and laundering them, sniff out the furniture and steam clean it. Wash the walls. Clean the mattresses. Best of luck to you.
