If you don’t prepare the walls before painting, you may get mixed results from the paint. Greasy or steamy areas may resist the paint. Rough areas may absorb more paint, changing the shade of paint. If you don’t mind repainting every year or two, go ahead and paint, especially with chalk paint or stucco. ☺️
make sure you dust them and use a stain blocking primer or a paint and primer in one
Hi Josephine. I have painted plenty of walls without washing them down. As long as they aren't dirty, or have a greasy build up on them you should be fine. The one things I do is take a wet rag and wipe the corners for dust webs.
If it is a kitchen, you MUST scrub. Use TSP.
