compost is always a good bet.
please contact your local Agricultural Extension office and get a soil sample test -- more plants/gardens/yards are harmed by the use of inappropriate or unneeded 'fertilizers' or mineral supplements than by not using anything. Good compost worked into your soil if you have it, but not the 'commercial' fertilizers until you know if you need it
Contact your County Agricultural Extension Office. Get a soil test done by them before you spend money on additives you don't need.
peat moss, lime and composted manure
I planted some herbs in an old chicken pen and had to use a machete to get in the gate! So leaves and twigs composted with chicken and rabbit manure is all I use.
