Pictures?
What is the use of the room? I would break it up with furniture, lighting, artwork and perhaps a rug. A photo would be great.
I see what you mean! Depending on your age and type of 'lounge' you're aiming for, a generally vertical pattern on the paper you choose will give a greater feeling of height. I still stick with my old standbys - lighting, furniture and artwork. The floor looks great, but to break up the space you may want to choose a 5 X 7 or 8 X 10 area rug and lay it perpendicular to the blue rug you have now. If the space is big enough, also turn the sectional to cover that entire back wall. Some nice floating shelves with knick-knacks that reflect your taste would be fun, too. Since this room has access to a garden, consider hanging some plants (or silks if there isn't enough daylight) to also brighten the look and bring the theme indoors.
Mostly, have fun!
Maybe change out the brown pillows and bring in some colors that are in that pretty picture above the couch... the idea of floating shelves is good.....add some table lamps as they give a softer light than ceiling lights...have fun and would love to see “after” pics!!!!
Paint the wall, matching the couch now doesn’t look good, a nice bright color.
Thank you for your comments I’ll take them on board, I like the idea of going with the colours in the painting, it’s staying as I love it. I’m working through my house, it needs an update, so this will be at the end of the year. But I will. Thank you
Hmmmmmm. Personally, I would be inclined to put no wallpaper up. Pick a warmer neutral shade of paint that marries well with your beautiful flooring. By doing that, the walls should flow as one and NOT show any significant stop point which actually stops the eye. Some folks are still painting accent walls but the trend in interior design is no longer popular. Add more lighting to tables at each end of your sectional. Pick colors from your rug or maybe a new rug to bring some pleasing accent colors into the room. Art pieces should be framed similarly with the same color framing from piece to piece.
Or maybe put a sofa table behind the sofa against the wall and add lamp(s) and decor. I would remove the artificial flower in the corner.
Here are some jumping off points. I do like the soft colors and the softness of the end wall does look lovely. Whatever you do, stay light....https://www.houzz.com/photo/301365-basement-family-room-traditional-basement-toronto

Use that painting that you love as your inspiration piece and use a color or two out of that painting for accessories like pillows and rug.

You also have alot of different styles and collectibles here. I would lean towards built ins at the tv end to artfully display some of your preciois things.
