You could take a brown stain with a sponge and wipe it down.

Use Sharpie Pens to draw lines on them to mimic Wood planking. Use a brown thick varnish to smear over to look like old wood. Or Use Chicken wire or small square wire to make central panels on cabinets. (Maybe with pictures of animals stuck on cabinets first , so they look like cages....Or stick on Gingham Contact........
Distress it using sandpapers on the areas where cabinets get the most wear like the edges and around the knobs.
Get some gray gel stain and go over them with a little on a rag, if it's too much just wipe it off.

I would try a gel stain. You may also be able to sand the edges a little.
