I would put up a big mirror with a table under it. Its nice to have a mirror before you leave and great to have a table for when you come home to set things on.
The mirror is a good idea. Have you thought of pallets? Or perhaps shelving for extra storage? Here is a link that might give you some ideas.

Since this can be seen from the front door, a statement piece would be nice. Below is a print of Renoir's Girls by the Seaside.
lA mirror would be nice, but there isn't much color in there so I like the idea of a big art piece. A print Like the Renoir would be lovely, but it really couldn't be seen in any detail. I think a nice metal 3 D sculpture would look great. The chandelier looks very traditional and elegant, so if that is where you want to go, maybe a large sample from travels (a fan, a bright painted screen, or a tapestry or any textile. Maybe just paint that wall around the door an accent color. Lots of fun ideas. Try to think of something you really want to show off, something no one else has. Has to have texture of some kind.
How about using the mirror and table idea but you can attach things around the mirror such as shells, fishing net, color fish/star fish, life preserver, bout or drift woo. A simple reclaimed wood frame with a colored wash would give color as well to the mirror. On the table you can place a wicker basket to place keys in, pretty glass container with black or white sand in it and a few shells and tiny drift wood. You could also have some of the blue or green glass float balls (not sure of the official name) in the table to add interest as well. It gives you the functionality you need and the texture, depth and color you want while staying true to beach theme!
