I found this old fashioned desk any ideas what I can do to bring it back to its original color

maybe it’s me by but is there a cardboard box on top? Is it a roll top? I’m a little confused.

Is that the original green finish on it? could be from 30s - 40s..... I always liked that color green myself and older pieces are sometimes finish in milk paint. Milk paint companies still make that shade of green.
