You CAN do this but first shut the power off (breaker) to the kitchen. Be sure to purchase a GFCI for safety reasons. If you have an Iphone, take a picture of the wires so that you will know exactly how to install the new element. Or if you don't feel comfortable doing that, by all means contact a licensed electrician. Safety First - ALWAYS. Best of luck.

That would be the best idea.

Not too much to it as long as you cut off the breaker, unscrew the fuse if you don't have breakers. Plug a lamp from another room so you will have enough light. Or while at the hardware ask if they have battery powered LED work light. Best money I ever spent at pulsetv.com. Unscrew the face plate and set aside where you won't knock the screw into the floor or sink. There's a screw at each end of the of the socket. Remove both and pull it out so you can see where wires are going. Pull the wires out and put new outlet in it's place. Push all back into place. Screw the outlet down. Replace cover and go turn on power. Test new outlet with a lamp before you plug in your appliance.

Please have all parts and tools before you start because your fridge will be off as long as you are doing the job.
