One option would be to have a board cut to your required dimensions. You can paint or stain it. On the bottom, (the side that will sit on top of your washer and dryer), I would add a felt or foam backing so it provides a bit of a cushion and does not scratch the top of your appliances. If you want to take the top further, you could add a thin layer of quilt batting then stretch some pretty fabric over the top.
