How should I fix this?

It's the ceiling in a 1979 mobile home, that had fake beams across the ceiling, with lights at either end.
The lights have been removed with the wires safely capped and tucked away.

Rub down and Paint or Cover with Ceiling paper or Vinyl Wallpaper.

I'd cover the whole ceiling with a layer of wallboard. It comes in two thicknesses, use the thin. After it's up, use a light texture from a spray can, then paint. If you try to patch it, it looks like it might show as there's so much to repair. This is easier.

Can't tell if the ceiling is smooth or popcorn textured. A better description or picture could help.

    • If it is a smooth type ceiling, clean the surface up from anything that is peeling away. Then use some spackle to smooth out inconsistencies. Sand and paint.

    • If it is a popcorn ceiling, I would consider scraping it all off and then spackle, sand and paint.

    • One other idea I have incorporates the lights. Instead of a faux beam. attach a 1x6 or a board that is wide enough to cover the same area. You could then extend the wires from the lights to a light track system. If the track lights are not appealing, you could have a groove cut along the underside of the 1x6, allowing a hidden path for wires to run out to the center of the room for a light or fan.
