Anything that you would put on the table as a top coat would still most likely cause the white spots. My antique claw foot table has multiple coats of polyurethane on it, but I make sure that I have a good trivet under anything that is hot or real cold. and always have a vinyl table cloth with the soft underside underneath the table cloths I use. My mom always used a padded table cover she had made that was at least a half inch thick on her dining room table.
Buy a couple trivets to keep the heat and damp off it.
you could have a glass top made for it. That way you can still see the table, but it will save the finish.
I would protect it using trivets.
