I read about spreading coffee grounds around the plants. I've been saving the grounds all winter. You have to refrigerator the grounds so they don't mold/mildew. After saving the grounds I hope it works.
Use a few layers of newspaper under mulch. Will eventually break down and compost, almost all ink is vegetable dyes days. Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen. Will act as fertilizer for leaf growth but lower flower output.
If it's a new bed, lay down layers of newspaper, and cardboard. Cut holes thru the layers to put in your plants. Then add a good 2-4 " of mulch. I like cedar, or cypress. Of the 2 cypress is heavier, and won't float away. Plus they both keep out insects. You can also use a product called Preen& Green. It is a fertilizer, and a pre- emergent weed killer. But you will have to pull existing weeds
