Replace sheetrock, get a professional to do the work.

If it's the old plaster and lath, it is easily repaired. First remove the old plaster until the edges are solid. Clean out the cracks in the lath. Mix a batch of plaster slightly loose. Press it on the wall forcing the plaster through the lath spaces. Leave it a little shy of flush, about 1/8 inch. When it sets put a thin layer over the affected area to make flush with the wall. Patience, patience. Be careful and it will be as good as new.
