Contact your local Agricultural Extension office for the best advice for your area. In Southern California I grow Tomatoes, peppers of all kinds, and summer squash with little effort. I think your climate is similar but the extra heat might make a difference.
Shade cloth and recessed growing areas can help battle the heat.
