Try wiping it with a mineral spirits paint thinner.
It's possible the top was refinished improperly. My kitchen table did this when I stained the top without first taking all of the old finish off. You will have to start from scratch; sand or strip the old finish off, then sand smoothly, clean, get a nice cherry stain and apply.
Denatured alcohol is use by preservationist, it will remove grim, old paste wax and spray wax. If you try a small spot to test, it will not harm the finish it's alcohol based. If you use it make sure the area is well ventilated, it stinks
Hello. Some old furniture gets a old sticky build up. I would wipe the top with a old rag and mineral spirits. Good Luck!
