How do I brighten up a dark living room?

It has only one large window, which faces north. It is in the center of the house and the south wall has no windows. Kind of a long narrow room and the south end seems so dark and far away! I put a faux window on the south wall with a mirror instead of window glass but it’s not enough.

What color is the wall and accessories?

The walls are a light terra-cotta, oriental rug on top of grey-blue wall to wall, burgundy upholstery, dark woods.

  • You don't say what kind of colors you used in the décor but whites, off white and yellows can help brighten a space. Also look for "white" light bulbs instead of those that cast a yellow glow.

These are "daylight" light bulbs and the difference is amazing. Also,I believe on Hometalk a lady had a dark hall an she put a fake window at the end complete with curtains and put lights behind it so it looked like the sun was shining through. Very nice. Perhaps you could add the lights to your fake window with maybe a collection of mirrors around it. And keep lamps on even during the day.

If budget allows, you could look into a solar tube type of small skylight. They give a lot of light for a very small fixture.

Personally I would paint the walls a lighter color, seems to much going on
