you probably WOULD have to in Illinois - unless you can pile a good 6-8 inches of mulch over ... perhaps burlap ? you'd have to UNCOVER them in early spring tho... easier to dig !

There seem to be a million variations out there on how to overwinter dahlias. In general, dahlias can be left in the ground after the first frost, but must be dug before the ground freezes. Remove the foliage and leave a three to four inch stem.
