Get a thin sheet of plywood. Cut to size, nail/glue it to the back.
Perhaps you could get a real thin piece of plywood and put some contact paper on it that would show in the front or perhaps paint it to match what the shelves are or how you want it? Good luck with this job.

Thin pressed board, Masonite, would work and not have the splintering edges of the plywood. Paint or contact paper on the front to match/contrast with the bookcase.
Headboard. Cheap can have store cut it to exact size. Nail in on with tiny nails like they use to rack down carpet. Comes in different colors of finished.
