Sharp edges on bench

I have a cute bench in our living room that is a hazard to our family! It has sharp edges that cut our legs as we walk by it. We have moved it several times but grandkids keep banging into it and cut and scratch themselves. Is there a way to ”disable” the offending points? We don’t want to get rid of it. We tried putting hand towels held with rubber bands but it looked silly...

Perhaps you could make a padded armrest that would soften the front edges and make a pillow or two or even a cushion out of the same material to make it not look funny with just the padded arm rest.

You can use a router to round the edges or just sand them down.

Both Nancy and Sarah have pretty good answers. Maybe you can get a piece of 120 grit sandpaper, lightly sand the corners of the arm rest a little at a time, until you think it's not a hazard. Next, get a minwax touch up pen from the Home Depot. There are several different colors.

If you decide to sand down or use a router to round the edges you may need to add stain and finish to match the rest of the piece. Polyshades by Minwax is an easy choice to apply stain and finish all in one. Hope you can make the piece more enjoyable for tears to come. http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/one-step-stain-and-finishes/minwax-polyshades

Why not try the styrofoam water pipe covers. Split them down the middle, may have to remove a little from the inside to fit well. This may be safer for little ones and shins. The putty of some type - crafters the is not permanent is best.

Ow! What a thigh bruise. I have a coffee table that loves shin bones. You can use throws, blankets and Afghans to soften the blow. Or you can buy some corner guards from a baby store or department. ☺️
