I love feeding the birds but they sling food all over the ground.

Even with an expensive bird feeder the birds will dig through the seeds to find the ones they want. There is an upside though, usually the doves and squirrels clean up most of it. Plus it gives the mice something to eat outside so they don't need to come looking inside.
I love feeding the birds too. I hang finch socks right outside our picture window. Every year more and more finches come to eat. You could put a kids snow saucer directly under your feeders to collect the seeds that are being thrown around. You could recycle the seeds this way. Best of luck to you.
I bought a seed cone, partially unwrapped it, and set it in an aluminum pie plate on my patio table. Mess stays in the pan.
Birds are messy, no doubt about it. I have 6 seed feeders - ball, fly through and house type. They fling seed E v e r y w h E r E! 🕊 It does provide food for the ground feeders that are young or too timid to fight for a space in or on the feeder itself. I also have a few gutsy acrobatic squirrels that turn up too. The dogs and cats chase them off but know to leave the birds alone. I trained them well. My favorite feeder is a fly through type. I paid $26 for it at least 10 years ago. Will last at least another 10 years - money well spent for a quality feeder.
Haha, I love my birds but they make a mess no matter what kind of feeder or catch that you put under. The best way I keep things clean is once a week I use my mower with the bag to suck up all the seed shells. Or I use my wet/dry vac once a week. I actually am thinking of getting a kiddy pool so I can stick my pole that holds my hanging feeder in the center of it. I think the mess would be so much easier to clean up
